How-To Shop in Bulk

Feeling inspired by all the low-waste pantry images filling your feed? Well, we’re here to tell you that your pantry can look just like that — it’s really super simple! The trick? Shopping in bulk.

Bulk food are everyday food items like dried fruit, grains, and even shampoo and conditioner, that are packaged in large quantities to reduce waste and encourage customers to bring their own reusable containers.

Ready to start shopping? Grab those empty glass jars, reusable Taste Without Waste Produce Bags and dive into our Bulk Shopping Quick-Tip Guide.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

1. Prepare Your Jars

The easiest and most cost-effective way to obtain your reusable containers is by saving your empty glass jars from foods like nut butter, salsa, or pasta sauce.

Plantd Tip: Want to make your jars photo-worthy? Remove labels by soaking jars in a mixture of warm water, baking soda, and dish soap for roughly 30 minutes. Scrub or peel off the label and enjoy a nice clean jar!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

2. Starting your shop

Whether shopping at a bulk-foods specific store or simple visiting the bulk section in your favourite grocery store, the process is always more or less the same.

Before you fill your containers with tasty treats, pop your dry, clean, and empty containers on the scale provided. Since the price of your bulk goodies are always determined by weight, this will allow you to record the weight of your jar and subtract from the final amount. And of course, if you’re ever feeling stuck or unsure about what is allowed at your local store, you can always ask for assistance!

Plantd Tip: To avoid having to weigh your jar each time, write the amount on the bottom with a permanent marker!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

3. The Fun Part

Now for the fun part. Enjoy filling your containers and reusable Taste Without Waste produce bags with all sorts of treats! Stock up on pasta for weekly dinners and minimize plastic packaging by filling up your containers with household necessities like fresh-smelling dish soap and detergent.

Trust us, finding all the package-free goodies will be your favourite part of your weekly shop.

Once done, weigh your containers for a second time and record the final weight. With the marker or pen provided by the scale.

You’ve filled your containers with tasty treats and now it’s time to purchase. Take your filled jars and reusable produce bags up to the counter for a final weighing. If the weight of your empty containers isn’t written on top, make sure to let the cashier know so they can subtract from the final amount.

And that’s it! You’ve completed your first bulk-food shop! Place all your goodies into your Taste Without Waste Grocery Tote and get ready to enjoy a low-waste pantry! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
