Crispy Baked Tofu in Lime & Black Pepper Sauce

Tried this recipe?Mention @plantd.co or tag us #plantd for a feature!
Tofu litereally is one of the favorite sources of protein. They are so versatile and they absorb and hold flavors very well. This asian-style lime and black pepper sauce is the perfect seasoning for cripsy overn-bakes tofu.

Ingredients

Baked Tofu

  • 3 blocks Extra Firm Tofu
  • 4 tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 3 tbsp Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp Chili Powder

Lime Black Pepper Sauce

  • 1 Red Onion small
  • 1 tsp Oil
  • 3 cloves Garlic minced
  • 1 Red Chili finely sliced
  • 1 tbsp Fresh Ginger minced
  • 1 Lime juiced
  • 2 tsp Black Pepper
  • 3/4 cup Water
  • 3 tsp Cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce
  • 3 tbsp Agave or maple syrup

Instructions

  • Drain tofu and wrap in a clean tea towel. Press it for 15-30 mins under something heavy to remove moisture (I use a big chopping board).
  • Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celcius.
  • Chop tofu into 3/4 inch pieces. Add to a bag or lidded tupperware with soy sauce, oil, turmeric and chilli powder. Shake around to evenly coat tofu.
  • Lay out on a baking tray and bake for 30 mins, turning half way through. When golden, turn off the heat and remove from the oven (they will crisp up further as they cool).
  • Add red onion to a saucepan and fry in a little oil for 5 mins. Add in garlic, chilli & ginger and fry for 2 mins until fragrant.
  • In a small jug combine all other ingredients until cornstarch has dissolved. Pour into saucepan and simmer until thick. Add tofu to the sauce and stir to coat. Serve with fluffy white rice, lime wedges and coriander.
